37 solar modules were running hot on this KwaZulu-Natal rooftop. Only 2 of them had an actual defect.

The owner wanted to know which panels were losing output, why, and what to fix first. Replacing panels on a guess is the expensive way to find out.

So we did one 3-minute thermal flight with our DJI Mavic 3T, capturing thermal and normal photos of every module side by side.

What we found:
✅ 15 modules just needed cleaning (dirt and bird droppings)
✅ 20 needed shade or objects cleared
⚠️ 2 had internal defects and are now on a watch list
🌡️ The hottest module hit 56°C, and the cause was shading

13 days after the flight, the owner had a report with every flagged module located, photographed and given a recommended action. The to-do list is mostly cleaning and shade fixes, not new panels. They also now have a module-by-module baseline to compare against at the next inspection.

What does the ground look like under dense bush? From above, a normal camera can’t tell you.

The top image is a drone photo of a heavily overgrown site. All you can see is the top of the bush. The bottom image is the same area mapped with LiDAR, with the vegetation filtered out.

The band in the middle is a slice through the site along the orange line. The white line is the top of the bush, and the orange line is the actual ground. That dip in the orange line is a drainage line the bush completely hides.

On an overgrown site, features like that decide where water flows, where a road can go and how much earthworks a project will need. LiDAR finds them because its laser pulses slip through gaps in the leaves and reach the soil, so the terrain gets mapped without clearing a single bush.

There are now three ways to work with Epic Air, and most people only know about one of them.

Fly with us.
We put the aircraft over your site and hand you the data. LiDAR survey, photogrammetry, thermal inspection, wind turbine blades, solar arrays, roofs, progress and volumes. You get the deliverable, not the flight.

Buy with us.
Epic Air is a registered DJI reseller. If your operation flies often enough to justify owning the capability, we supply the industrial platform and payloads, configured and ready, from people who fly the same kit commercially.

Register with us.
New, and opening in September. If you hold an RPL and want to fly commercially without building your own operating certificate, you can operate under the Epic Air ROC. More detail on that next month.
