Mossel Bay are you ready? SkyGrid launches september.

The current system: Alarm goes off at 02:14. The nearest patrol vehicle is 8-15 minutes away, and until it gets there you are responding to something nobody has actually seen.

SkyGrid closes that gap. A drone sits docked on site, ready every night. The alarm fires, it launches, and it is overhead in under 5 minutes with live thermal and visual going to your control room.

New kit day at Parallax Aero. DJI Matrice 400, Zenmuse L2 and the Intelligent Battery Station, straight out of the boxes.

Here is why this combination matters, and it is not the spec sheet.

Photogrammetry gives you a beautiful picture of the top of the bush. LiDAR gives you the ground underneath it.

The L2 fires a pulse that returns up to five times off a single beam. First return hits the canopy, the last one reaches bare earth. That is the difference between a surface model and a real terrain model, and on fynbos, thick veld or plantation ground it is the difference between a survey you can design on and one you cannot.

What that unlocks:
1. True contours and cross sections through vegetated corridors
2. Cut and fill volumes you can actually price
3. Floodline and drainage modelling built on real ground levels
4. Stockpile and quarry volumes without putting a person on the pile
5. Powerline and structure clearance data

The M400 carries it for up to 59 minutes with RTK positioning and an IP55 rating, so weather does not end the day. The Battery Station keeps packs cycling, which means back-to-back flights instead of standing around waiting.

Big site, thick vegetation, tight programme. That is where this earns its keep.

At home you can press your panic button. What happens at the mall, or when my daughter walks across campus at night?

Two updates since my last post.

The big one: we have started developing SkyGrid 911, built specifically for Stellenbosch students and residents.

Press the button on your phone or your smartwatch. That is it. You don't type. You don't explain.

Our control room immediately knows who you are, where you are and what type of emergency it is. If you need an ambulance, they have your blood type, allergies and whatever else you choose to share with us.

One part is different from most systems. Most panic buttons can be cancelled, so someone threatening you can force you to cancel it, or just cancel it themselves.

With ours, a cancel command means we call you. Give us your stand-down phrase and we cancel the response. Give us your duress phrase and everything looks like it is being cancelled. The operator thanks you and says goodbye. But we know you are in trouble, so we still send the cavalry.

We have also had a first discussion with the Municipality's emergency services. Early days, but positive.

As ’n drone 03:00 in die oggend oor jou huis vlieg, is dit nie om te kyk wat jy doen nie. Dit is op pad na iemand wat hulp nodig het.

SkyGrid vlieg direk na die noodsituasie, meestal met thermal. Ons sien 'heat signatures' nie gesigte of klere nie. Ons doel is eenvoudig: kry oë op die probleem voordat die verdagte skade kan aanrig.

Mosselbaai is wel een van die veiliger dorpe in Suid-Afrika. Maar as ons dit so wil hou, gaan ons moet vinniger reageer op misdaad.
