The drawer

We recently moved a client into a modern contemporary style apartment as a temporary stop over until the right unit became available for her at her chosen retirement village. A really lovely unit - second (and top) floor with spacious lift, huge floor to ceiling windows, views of and access to a glorious green belt, very close to shops and restaurants. Perfect.

But!!! Only one cutlery drawer in the kitchen. One! And very few cupboards. Don’t people cook anymore? Is it all delivery? Who hasn’t got a second drawer like this? And, you know exactly what is in it, right down to the screw to the piano lid that fell off in 2004.

I had a look at the drawers in my kitchen when I got back and wondered how I would cope - but you do!! We make a plan - our South African heritage. Use a counter top cutlery caddy for knives and forks and spoons, a ceramic jar for cooking utensils, dish towels into plastic storage basket and kept in linen cupboard, rolls of baking papers and cling wrap into cupboard above oven (only basketball players can normally reach them). I also keep my coffee/tea mugs in a drawer so they would have to be relocated. And the electronics drawer - you know the one with cables, batteries, torches, old phones, bag sealing pegs , expired credit cards and pencils - this just has to go!

Done.

But still! One kitchen drawer!

Focus on joy

No matter what the size of your home is: big, small, medium, the anxiety and heartache of sorting, discarding and gifting precious possessions is the same.

However, most times the freedom of being unshackled of the stuff leads to genuine joy and lightness!

We like to work steadily with our client, from room to room, wrapping a lifetime in memories, not in the boxes. And the joy is what often allows our clients to let go, to set aside a piece for a granddaughter who will love it next, or send to auction to find a new wall to brighten, knowing that the memory does not go with the object, but stays with our client.

So if a hand lingers a little longer holding a book, a vase or a chair, we won’t rush you. It is that happiness that sometimes makes it easier to let go.

Our client had spent many years in a retirement village centrally located in Rosebank, and was justifiably anxious to let stuff go, to chose what to take, and which curtains to take 😊. With care and discussions, we navigated the downsizing and packing and set up the new home, carefully positioning the chosen pieces to feel like home.

And of course, family doesn’t need to live overseas to feel the stress of moving elderly parents. The need is local too!

A visual treasure hunt

Isn’t it amazing how flower-spotting can shift the rhythm of daily life from rush-rush to the quiet pace of nature.

I suppose that is why most established retirement villages have such gorgeous gardens - and a resultant sense of calm.

With me it begins with a visual scan, and then I see flickers of colour - and then there I go, off into the gardens. So beautiful!

80 years old and still gorgeous

Sometimes we have the privilege of working in magnificent older houses of Johannesburg. They don't have to be Randlord homes to be magnificent. The craftsmanship, parquet floors and deep red entrance hall ceramic tiles seem to slow one down, breathing quietens and you relax. Strange.

No wonder the new owners were ready, as we cleared each room, to get started with their renovations which will be sympathetic to the original architecture. The sliding doors will remain, as will the floors. Just some modernising.
