Similan Group

Similan Group Similan is an awarded property development company.

Harold Spies founded Similan Properties in November 2010 because he wanted to contribute to the way that homes are designed, developed and sold in South Africa. With the aim of creating sustainable residential developments for the emerging middle-class market, Similan Properties has brought a fresh approach to the industry that evolves as they continue to innovate. Their beautiful, award-winning e

states create the opportunity for many South Africans to live in quality homes, not only challenging the accepted norms of affordable housing developments but also providing an effective business model that secures year-on-year growth. Their developments include homes for mid-level essential workers to well-established buyers and people scaling down. Similan Properties don’t simply develop the estates, but take a holistic view of the entire lifecycle of these properties, from acquiring land, developing and selling homes, to working closely with partners and sister companies Plotsticker and Staylonger that handle marketing and the management of these properties and their tenants. This unique, hands-on approach to development management allows Similan to maintain the quality of not only the design and construction but also the experience of each new resident, for every estate they’ve developed thus far, while also extracting value from the total property value chain. This residential property development and project management company has won awards for its work, including the Housing Project of the Year Award in 2014, and was the first developer in Africa to be awarded, Edge Certification and continues to redefine urban living through innovative design.

We have a "lekker" bunch of people in our Newinbosch team and we like to make sure they know! This week, we held the first session in our "The Newinbosch Way" series, hosted in the brand new Third Space, a meeting, events and connection venue. We spoke about vision, mission and client centricity, amongst a few core topics. Fuelled by good coffee and loads of interaction, of course.

Our first session was with our team leaders, and we'll be rolling this out to the rest of the team soon.

The spine of every company is an efficient financial team, and Sisipho is an important part of keeping things together.

Sisipho's Off Plan questions are up next and we're chuffed to be competing in an Olympic relay team with her.

Newinbosch Square opened with a big "woohoo"! and we're delighted to be a partner in a great neighbourhood shopping centre, on the corner of Newinbosch Neighbourhood Estate.

The addition of convenient everyday shopping, enhances not only our development, but the lives of everyone in the vicinity and visitors to Stellenbosch.

With a fabulous Pick 'n Pay as anchor and a complementary tenant mix, our little centre is going to punch way above its weight!

There are people who think inside the box, people who think outside it, and then there's Pieter du Toit, who's already stress-testing whether the box is even financially viable.

Our Head of Possibilities sat down for three questions, no script, no filter. The result is equal parts grounded and completely out there, which, if you know Pieter, is exactly what you'd expect.

What does green living actually look like?

Urbika Apartments by Similan, is a case worth knowing. Located in Parkdene, Boksburg, Phase 1 of the Urbika Urban Lifestyle Estate is a 343-unit rental development with green credentials, real amenities, and genuine thought put into how people live together.

It achieved EDGE* Advanced certification across all units, placing it among the first residential buildings in South Africa to do so.

What residents get:
- EDGE Advanced green certification across all units
- Biometric access, electric fence, CCTV, and QR visitor codes, all managed via a Smart Wallet App
- A Curro Castle and Curro Academy school directly opposite the estate
- Outdoor gym, volleyball court, splash fountain, and a clubhouse
- Fibre internet in every unit

Key environmental features:
- A photovoltaic solar system providing approximately 30% of the estate's total energy.
- Excess solar energy stored as hot water in centralised boilers via a ring-system: no battery waste and immediate hot water delivery to all units.
- Grey water reticulation for garden irrigation with near-zero reliance on municipal water.
- Four blocks feeding grey water into a natural filtration system connected to an onsite attenuation pond for stormwater harvesting.

*EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) is a green building standard developed by the International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group) and administered locally by the Green Building Council of South Africa. Certification requires at least 20% savings on energy, water, and embodied materials beyond SANS 10400, the national building standard.

Tab hoarder. Multi-hyphenate. Accidental concrete scientist.

Across development, project management, and principal roles, no two days at Similan look the same, and apparently, neither does anyone's browser.

Tarquin Geldenhuys goes deep on the stuff you didn't know you needed to know: why 50 open tabs can actually be a legitimate strategy, what a Similan-inspired office would really feel like, and the quietly fascinating truth about how buildings change long after construction wraps.

We all need that centre, the person who keeps us and the business honest and on track. Who dots all the i's and crosses all the t's and asks questions why, how, and where they are dotted and crossed. Our CFO, Arina, ensures each project is built on solid financial ground.

We asked her three questions, off plan and unscripted.

Soil, seasons, and something growing.

Newinbosch has always been a working piece of land. It just looks a little different now.

Our urban garden is putting down roots, quite literally, as a space where food actually comes from somewhere, where seasons mean something, and where the ground beneath your feet is genuinely cared for. Regenerative by design, alive by nature.

Kids can dig in the dirt. Neighbours can swap stories over seedlings, and if you need a handful of herbs for tonight's dinner, they're there for the taking (gently, please, the rosemary has feelings).

As the garden matures, so does our thinking around how the harvest gets shared. We're figuring it out thoughtfully, together.

This land spent decades growing wine. That instinct for cultivation didn't go anywhere, it just found new ground.

We'd like you to meet the people behind Similan Group. Off Plan is our new series: three questions, no fluff, just the real personalities that make this company what it is. First through the door is our CEO, Harold Spies. He's thoughtful, candid, and has a very specific idea of what our company mascot should be.

Swipe to meet the man behind the blueprint.
