Police are urging motorists to drive to the conditions and be properly prepared before travelling to Tasmania's elevated areas after several people became stranded on Highland Lakes Road at Breona overnight due to snow.
All motorists were accounted for, with no reports of serious injury.
Weather and road conditions can change rapidly in alpine and elevated regions, creating hazardous driving conditions and snow and ice can develop quickly and make roads extremely dangerous, leaving motorists at risk of becoming stranded if they are not adequately prepared.
If you're planning travel to elevated areas, please:
❄️ Ensure your vehicle is suitable for snow and icy conditions - including whether you might need snow chains.
❄️ Carry an emergency kit during winter, including food, water, warm clothing, blankets, a torch, spare batteries or charging devices, and sufficient fuel.
❄️ Check weather forecasts and road conditions before you leave and be prepared for sub-zero temperatures in the event of a breakdown, crash or unexpected delay.

🛻Tow trucks may not be able to access vehicles that become stuck in snow or off-road locations, and many remote areas have limited mobile phone reception.
