Can simply looking at trees change the way we feel?

One of the most influential studies in environmental psychology found that hospital patients recovering from the same surgery experienced measurably better outcomes when their room overlooked mature trees rather than a brick wall.

Patients with views of trees spent less time in hospital, required less pain medication and received fewer negative observations from nursing staff.

While no single study should be viewed in isolation, it’s a reminder that mature trees are more than a beautiful outlook. Their value extends beyond what we see.

Research from the University of Exeter found that people who spend at least 120 minutes a week in green space report significantly higher levels of health and wellbeing.

Even before its transformation, this patch of land restores the mind and body.

The winter sun broke through, birdsong filled the air - and the scent of the trees, subtle as it is, went about its quiet work.

It’s thanks to compounds like phytoncides - natural oils released by trees - that time spent in nature can boost the immune system, calm the nervous system, and lift the mood.
