Rent-to-own can sound like a great way to work toward homeownership while renting—but it’s important to understand the potential drawbacks.

⚠️ 1. Higher Monthly Payments
Rent-to-own arrangements may cost more than a traditional rental because part of the payment may be credited toward a future purchase.

⚠️ 2. You May Lose Your Option Fee
Some agreements require an upfront option fee or other non-refundable payment. If you ultimately don’t purchase the property, you could lose that money depending on the contract.

⚠️ 3. You Still May Not Qualify for a Mortgage
Rent-to-own doesn’t guarantee mortgage approval. If your credit, income, debt levels, or down payment aren’t sufficient when it’s time to buy, you may not be able to complete the purchase.

⚠️ 4. The Purchase Price Could Become a Problem
The purchase price is often agreed upon in advance. If the property’s market value changes significantly, you could end up paying more than the home’s market value—or face other financial consequences depending on the agreement.

Here’s the basic idea:
