Canada's Affordability Problem Needs More Than Rates
When we talk about housing affordability in Canada, it’s so much more than just interest rates or numbers on a page—it’s about the real lives and dreams behind every front door. While a drop in borrowing costs can help ease those monthly payments, it doesn’t address the core issue: we simply don’t have enough homes. The central bank has called monetary policy a blunt tool for a reason. Lowering rates touches every corner of the economy, but the deeper challenges—like housing shortages, rezoning, infrastructure, and permitting—need thoughtful, targeted solutions.
As someone who’s seen firsthand how closely homeownership is tied to families’ sense of stability and future security, I know how much is at stake. With nearly half of all bank lending connected to residential real estate, it’s clear our homes shape not only our personal wealth, but the entire economic landscape. A recent policy review even questioned whether we’re truly measuring the impact of rising home prices on families, and whether inflation data reflects the real cost of shelter.
In the end, what matters most is clear, compassionate communication and a commitment to real change—more homes, better planning, and stronger infrastructure. Because lasting affordability isn’t just a market trend; it’s about making sure every family can create memories and feel secure in a place they call home.
