In two months, IndyCar comes to our city. The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy runs August 14 - 16 on a brand-new 12-turn street circuit through Markham Centre - the first time the race leaves Toronto since 1986, and the largest sporting event York Region has ever hosted.
Most people are talking about the race. I keep thinking about what it says about Markham. A five-year commitment like this doesn't land in a city by accident. It lands because of a decade of investment in Markham Centre - the York University campus, the Unionville GO corridor, thousands of new residents, and now streets being rebuilt to international racing standards. Those repaved roads, new sidewalks, and upgraded signals stay long after the barriers come down.
The estimates being reported are a $50 million boost to the local economy and 10,000 jobs supported over race weekend. Add broadcast coverage in over 200 countries, and Markham gets the kind of global exposure money can't normally buy.
Short term? Yes - expect lane reductions around Enterprise, Kennedy, and University Boulevard while construction wraps up. A weekend of noise. Worth it, in my view.
I've been selling homes in Markham and Unionville for a long time. Events like this don't happen to cities in decline - they happen to cities on the way up.
Are you planning to go? Let me know in the comments - and if you're curious what all this momentum means for your own property, my door is always open.
