The Town of Stouffville is inviting the community to celebrate the official opening of the new Urban Plaza at 6240 Main Street on Wednesday, August 12, from 3 to 5 p.m.

The celebration will include the official unveiling of the GIP Stage, recognizing the contribution Green Infrastructure Partners (GIP) has made to the new downtown cultural space. Formal remarks and a ribbon cutting will begin at approximately 3 p.m.

The Urban Plaza transforms a former parking area beside the Village of Stouffville mural into a welcoming, people-focused public space designed to bring new activity to the downtown core. The plaza includes flexible shaded seating, games/activity space, landscaping, and the new, performance stage.

“The Urban Plaza creates a new place for our community to gather, connect and experience everything downtown Stouffville has to offer,” said Mayor Iain Lovatt. “We are proud to recognize Green Infrastructure Partners as the founding naming rights sponsor of the GIP Stage and grateful for their support in bringing more live music, cultural programming and shared experiences to the heart of our community.”

Residents can explore the plaza, play a friendly game of co****le and learn about the upcoming Live on Main concert series. There will be an ice cream truck offering sweet treats while supplies last.

The plaza’s conceptual design was created by Riley Rogers, a Stouffville resident and Landscape Architecture student at the University of Guelph. Rogers approached the Town with the opportunity to contribute the design to his professional portfolio and supported its use in developing the new community space.

The Urban Plaza is intended to encourage residents and visitors to spend more time downtown, support nearby shops and restaurants, and create new opportunities for community programming and small-scale cultural performances.

The opening also marks the beginning of Live on Main, free outdoor concert series taking place on the GIP Stage throughout August and September. Performances begin at 6:30 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.
