MYTH MONDAY

MYTH: Closing vents in unused rooms saves money.

TRUTH: Closing too many vents can reduce airflow and make the system work harder.

It sounds logical — close off the rooms you’re not using and send the heat somewhere else.

But most forced-air systems are designed to move air throughout the whole home. Closing several vents can increase pressure in the ductwork and reduce airflow, which can make the system less efficient.

With heating season starting up, it’s a good reminder that sometimes trying to “save” energy can do the opposite.

FUN FACT FRIDAY

A very strong El Niño is developing for winter 2026–27, with NOAA currently putting the chance at over 90%.

El Niño can influence winter weather patterns across North America, including Canada, but it does not automatically mean Durham will have a mild or snow-free winter.

So while you may hear plenty of “mild winter” predictions over the next few months, I wouldn’t put the snow shovel away just yet. 😄

🏠 Insulation — up to $7,700
🪟 Windows & doors — $100 per rough opening
💨 Air sealing — up to $250
🔥 Heat pumps — up to $12,000
☀️ Solar + battery storage — up to $10,000
🌡️ Smart thermostat — $100
⚡ Appliances — up to $200

There are different rules depending on the upgrade. Some require a home energy assessment, while others can qualify as single upgrades.

For the assessment-based stream, the post-upgrade assessment generally needs to be completed within 180 days of the initial assessment or by December 31, 2026, whichever comes first.

The $100 smart thermostat rebate ends December 31, 2026.

MYTH MONDAY

MYTH: Every home can easily accommodate an EV charger.

TRUTH: Most homes have options, but the electrical panel and available capacity need to be checked first.

With more buyers driving electric vehicles, EV charging is becoming another feature people think about when looking at a home.

But having a garage doesn’t automatically mean you can simply install any Level 2 charger. The home’s electrical service, panel capacity and existing load all matter.

In some cases, the solution may be as simple as using a lower-amperage charger or load-management equipment. In others, an electrical upgrade may be needed.

If EV charging matters to you when buying a home, it’s worth having the electrical setup checked before assuming you’re good to go.

MYTH: Home didn’t sell this summer? Wait until spring.

TRUTH: You may not need a new season — you may need a new strategy.

If your home was on the market this summer and didn’t sell, simply waiting until spring may not fix the problem.

Here are 4 things worth reviewing first:

Price — Was it positioned properly against the homes buyers were comparing it to?
Presentation — Did the photos, staging and condition make the right first impression?
Marketing — Did the listing reach enough of the right buyers?
Feedback — What were buyers consistently saying after showings?

Sometimes a few smart changes can make a bigger difference than waiting for a different season.
