As summer winds down, there's one more thing we have to talk about... finding the perfect Ontario cottage. πŸ›Άβ˜€οΈ

If you've spent the last few months dreaming about weekends on the water, now is actually one of the best times to buy. As the season comes to a close, many cottage owners are motivated to sell before winter, giving buyers more choice and greater negotiating power.

Looking for the best location? Here are some of our favourite cottage destinations, all within a short drive of downtown Ottawa:

πŸ“ Mississippi Lake (Carleton Place) – 45 minutes

πŸ“ Perth Area (Otty Lake, Christie Lake & Black Lake) – 1 to 1.5 hours

πŸ“ Westport (Upper Rideau Lake, Wolfe Lake & Westport Sand Lake) – 1.5 hours

πŸ“ Calabogie Lake & Burnstown (Madawaska River) – 1.5 hours

πŸ“ White Lake – 50 minutes

πŸ“ Arnprior (Ottawa River) – 45 minutes

πŸ“ Val-des-Monts (Lac McGregor) – 45 minutes

πŸ“ Charleston Lake – 1 hour 45 minutes

Whether you're searching for a cozy three-season retreat or a year-round waterfront home, there's a cottage waiting for you.

πŸƒ Like it or not, the lazy days of summer are soon coming to an end...

If you could spend the last couple of weeks soaking up every minute of the season, where would you be?

πŸ“– Curled up with a good book on a cozy porch swing...

OR

😴 Drifting off for an afternoon nap in a hammock under the trees...

It's a tough choice, but you can only pick one!

Here's to making the most of what's left of summer days. β˜€οΈπŸ’š

This one takes a little more vision... πŸ‘€

At first glance, it looks like a construction zone. But look a little closer and you'll see exposed brick, a beautiful original staircase, and the chance to create something incredible.

If this were your project, what would you do?

β€’ Create an open-concept layout?
β€’ Restore the exposed brick?
β€’ Highlight the original staircase?
β€’ Add a modern industrial feel?
β€’ Finish it as a cozy family space?

Sometimes the biggest transformations start with the roughest spaces.

What would your dream renovation look like? 🏑

Check back tomorrow for a few options for how it could look!

Last week, we talked about creating the perfect cottage feel indoors. This week, we're stepping outside... because let's be honest, that's where cottage life really happens. β˜€οΈπŸŒ²

Here are a few ideas to create an outdoor space you'll never want to leave:

πŸͺ‘ Muskoka chairs are a must. Whether they're gathered around a fire pit, lined up on the dock, or overlooking the lake, nothing says "Ontario cottage" quite like a set of classic Muskoka chairs. Bonus points if they're in a fun pop of colour!
πŸ”₯ Create a cozy fire pit area. Add a few side tables, string lights, and a stack of firewood to create the perfect place for roasting marshmallows, sharing stories, and making memories.
🌿 Work with nature. Instead of perfectly manicured gardens, embrace native plants, wildflowers, ferns, ornamental grasses, and natural stone pathways that blend beautifully with the surrounding landscape.
πŸ›Ά Celebrate life on the water. Store paddles in a decorative rack, display a canoe nearby, or create a comfortable dockside seating area where you can enjoy your morning coffee with a waterfront view.
πŸ’‘ Add warm lighting. String lights, lanterns, solar pathway lights, and candles help create a cozy atmosphere after the sun goes down without competing with the stars.

πŸŒ… Let the view be the focal point. Sometimes the best decorating decision is simply arranging your seating to take in the lake, the trees, or a beautiful Ontario sunset.

What's your outdoor cottage must-have? Muskoka chairs? A dock? A fire pit? A screened-in porch? We'd love to hear your answer in the comments!

This room definitely has a lot going on, but underneath it all is a space with plenty of potential.

The patterned carpet, traditional furniture, wall dΓ©cor, and abundance of greenery make it feel like a true time capsule. That said, it's been beautifully cared for.

If this were your living room, what would you tackle first?

β€’ Replace the carpet?
β€’ Update the furniture?
β€’ Brighten the walls with a fresh coat of paint?
β€’ Install a more modern light fixture?
β€’ Keep a few vintage pieces for character?

Would you give this room a complete makeover, or keep some of its classic charm? Tell us what you'd do! 🏑

You finally found the perfect Ontario cottage. The keys are in your hand, the lake is sparkling, and now comes the fun part... making it feel like your cottage.

The good news? You don't need to go full-on nautical themed (unless you want to! πŸ˜‰). Creating that cozy cottage feel is more about the atmosphere than filling every room with anchors, ropes, and lighthouses.

Here are a few timeless ways to bring the cottage vibe to life:

πŸƒ Stick to natural materials like pine, cedar, stone, and rattan to bring the outdoors in.
πŸ›‹οΈ Choose cozy, comfortable furniture over anything too formal. Oversized sofas, plaid throws, and well-loved leather chairs are always a good fit.
🌊 Bring the lake indoors with shades of navy, forest green, warm neutrals, and crisp white. These colours feel fresh without being overly themed.
🦌 Add personality with vintage finds. Antique paddles, old fishing gear, framed maps, weathered lanterns, or even a canoe paddle displayed on the wall can add just the right amount of cottage charm.
πŸ–ΌοΈ Decorate with local artwork or landscape photography featuring lakes, forests, and Canadian scenery to give your space a genuine Ontario feel.

🌿 Don't rush the process. The best cottages feel collected over the years, with a mix of new pieces, family heirlooms, flea market treasures, and souvenirs from weekends at the lake.

At the end of the day, the perfect cottage isn't about following a decorating trend. It's about creating a place where everyone feels relaxed, connected, and excited to spend time together.

What would be the first thing you'd add to make a new cottage feel like home? We'd love to hear your ideas in the comments!

Check back next week, when we'll be sharing our favourite ideas for creating the perfect outdoor cottage spaces, from cozy fire pit areas to dreamy lakeside lounging spots!
