Did you know that sunflowers incorporated into plasterwork in the early to mid 19th century were a statement of wealth, good fortune and hospitality? Plaster artisans strategically molded sunflowers on ceilings because their high-relief petals would catch the flickering light from oil lamps, making the ceiling look luminous. At Maison Maitland our living room crown molding is adorned with many sunflowers 🌻 along with peonies and roses. Such beautiful craftsmanship. Luckily, parts were restored in the 1960’s and our ceilings are as beautiful as I imagine they were 200 years ago. A fine example of living art. (sunflowers Golden Creek Horticulture )
