No cell service. House numbers that are purely decorative. And me, driving in circles past the same adorable saltbox while a gentleman on his front step watched me go back and forth wondering what in the world I was at.

So I gave up and pulled into his driveway for directions. And I got them. Right after the full family rundown, the second ex-wife, the dog’s name, and what Uncle Gerald did in the summer of ’74. Which, for the record, was scandalous.

The actual directions? Go past the cod shed, turn at the dark gray house not the light one, and if you hit the blue upside down dory you’ve gone too far.

He was still on that porch waving when I drove back out. That’s Bay hospitality. Salt of the earth, every time.
