Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak Under Investigation in Toronto

Toronto Public Health is investigating a Legionnaires' disease outbreak in the area around Bathurst Street and Dupont Street. So far, six confirmed cases have been identified among people who live, work, or visited the area. Symptoms began between July 2 and July 26. Officials are also investigating whether the outbreak is connected to another cluster at Castleview Wychwood Towers, where at least five cases have been confirmed.

The source has not yet been identified, but investigators are examining cooling towers and other man made water systems that can spread Legionella bacteria through tiny water droplets in the air.

The good news is that Legionnaires' disease does not spread from person to person, and Toronto Public Health says the risk to the general public remains low.

What is Legionnaires' disease?

Legionnaires' disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. People become infected by breathing in contaminated water droplets, not by drinking contaminated water or through contact with another infected person.

Common sources include:

Cooling towers on large buildings
Hot tubs and spas
Decorative fountains
Humidifiers
Large plumbing systems

Symptoms may include:

Fever
Cough
Shortness of breath
Muscle aches
Headache

Older adults, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic health conditions face a higher risk of severe illness.

This outbreak is also a reminder of the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of cooling towers and building water systems, especially during the summer months when warmer temperatures can encourage bacterial growth.

If you were in the Bathurst and Dupont area during July and develop symptoms, contact a healthcare provider promptly.
