Some houses tell their stories in the architecture. Others in the people who have lived there.⁠

The latest edition of In Residence looks at the provenance of homes — the details, stories and past lives that become part of a house's character.⁠

At Garden House in Adlington, that history belongs to Emily Bishop, the much-loved Coronation Street character, whose IRL home was once an 18th-century dowager's cottage that forms part of this since-extended property.⁠

At Swythamley Hall, the story is rather more extraordinary. The Brocklehurst family owned the estate for generations; one accompanied Shackleton to Antarctica, while Colonel Brocklehurst established a private zoo after returning from the Sudan. During the Second World War, the animals were released when food became scarce. Remarkably, wallabies from the zoo survived in the wild around the Roaches for decades.⁠

Pennsylvania in Prestbury has a different kind of provenance. The house we are currently representing occupies the site of Hans Sigmund Jaretzki's ambitious 1936 Modernist house, with local accounts recalling visits from David Niven and Errol Flynn during Cheshire's pre-war social scene.⁠
