Bitumen coatings can have legitimate maintenance uses, but they are not a substitute for correctly diagnosing and repairing a defective roof.

⚠️ RECENTLY RENOVATED… BUT NO BUILDING CONTROL SIGN-OFF.

This property had been recently renovated, but during inspection we identified concerns with the insulation and ventilation arrangement within the roof space.

More importantly, the works do not have building control sign-off.

That is a major issue for prospective buyers.

Without the correct approval, there may be questions over:

• Whether the work complies with current regulations
• The quality of the installation
• Future remedial costs
• Mortgage and legal implications during the purchase process
• The risk of condensation, mould and timber deterioration if the work has been carried out incorrectly

The valley and adjoining roof junctions show exactly why detailed roof inspections matter. Valleys, abutments and changes in roof geometry concentrate rainwater and are particularly vulnerable when the original detailing begins to deteriorate or has not been formed correctly.

At The Veteran Survey Company, we use close-up inspection and drone imagery where appropriate so that we can assess areas that simply cannot be properly inspected from ground level.

Choosing paint isn’t just about colour 🎨

Different paints perform very differently.

Contract matt is cheap and quick. Vinyl matt is a good everyday option. Durable washable paints are better for high-traffic areas, while specialist lime, clay and mineral finishes can be more suitable for traditional buildings.

The right specification can improve durability, finish and compatibility with the building fabric.

THESE STAIRS ARE NOW UNDER INVESTIGATION ⚠️

We’ve been called to investigate a suspected staircase defect within an Airbnb rental property.

Visually, defects like this can be easy to overlook.

But once movement or unusual performance is identified, further investigation is essential to establish the cause, the extent of the defect and whether remedial work is required.

Testing is currently ongoing and we’ll share the findings when the investigation is complete.
