August is one of the most fun — and challenging — months in hospitality.

Between back-to-back changeovers, heatwaves and plenty of guests to look after, the pressure is always on. Add in the unexpected challenges (we’ve recently had a boiler issue!), alongside trying to balance family life during the school holidays, and like so many families, we’re constantly juggling.

That’s exactly why receiving a review like this feels so rewarding.

🐾 Happy International Dog Day! 🐾

Today we’d like to introduce you to a very special member of our family — our rescue boy, Benny. ❤️

Benny found us when he was around three years old, and he has been part of our lives for the past 11 years. He remains a constant source of joy, companionship and, a wonderfully calming presence.

Anyone who has shared their life with a dog will understand just how special these incredible companions are.

Benny is slowing down now. He is deaf, his walks are a little shorter and slower, and his beautiful, soulful eyes are becoming increasingly blue and hazy. But he is still very much our Benny — still bringing us happiness every single day. 🐾❤️

We truly believe that dogs are one of life's greatest blessings, and it has been such a pleasure over the years to meet so many of your wonderful four-legged friends here at Blacksmiths Cottages, nr Filey.

So today, on International Dog Day, we celebrate Benny — and all the dogs who make our world a happier, kinder and more joyful place. 🐶❤️

Just four weeks to go until this year's Filey Kite Festival!

Come down to Filey Brigg Country Park and see spectacular kite flying in the skies over the Yorkshire coast.

The free festival takes place on Friday 18 September from 6.30pm to 9pm, Saturday 19 September from 10am to 4pm and Sunday 20 September from 10am to 4pm.

This year, for the first time, we have a Friday Night Flight. Our Learn to Fly zone and teddy bear drop are back, and new for this year is a make-your-own-kite area.

Traders from Filey Food Festival will be on hand with delicious local food.

What a fantastic summer it's been at Blacksmiths Cottages! ☀️

We've loved welcoming so many first-time guests, as well as catching up with familiar faces returning for another stay. Thank you to everyone who has chosen to spend part of their summer with us.

We now have just two August stays remaining at Little Smithy – our cosy studio cottage that's perfect for one or two people looking for a peaceful escape. It's one of our favourite places to unwind, with everything you need for a relaxing break just a mile from Filey.

Filey beats Whitby in the list of the UK’s best seaside towns. ⚓🌊

Whitby is one of Yorkshire’s best-known coastal destinations, but nearby Filey topped Which?’s 2026 list of the UK’s best seaside towns.

Filey ranked above both Whitby and Scarborough, earning four stars for its beach, seafront, scenery and value for money.

The town’s wide sandy beach is popular for long walks, sandcastle building, kite flying, and horse riding. At low tide, rock pools appear, perfect for family exploring.

Away from the beach, visitors can enjoy coastal walks along the Cleveland Way, browse independent shops, visit Filey Museum and Filey Zoo, or stop for traditional fish and chips.
