An empty property can become a serious source of stress for its owners, but it can also become someone’s much-needed home.

After Chris and Claire moved house, their one-bedroom flat in Glasgow’s east end stood empty for eight years. Flooding, problems with previous contractors and difficult family circumstances made dealing with the property increasingly overwhelming.

“It just spiralled out of control,” says Claire.

After a referral from Glasgow City Council, our Empty Homes team helped Chris and Claire understand their options and agree a plan for the flat. Over a few months, we completely refurbished the property and brought it back into use, transforming it from a one-bedroom “storage unit” in a state of dereliction into a stylish, warm two-bedroom home.

The finished flat became a safe, welcoming home for a young mother and her baby boy, close to the nursery he attended.
