We love getting to know the people behind our properties — and Farmers Retreat has one of those stories that perfectly captures what a break in Keswick is all about.

As the name suggests, Farmers Retreat really is just that. The owners are busy dairy farmers, and this cosy Keswick cottage is their way of stepping away from the daily routine and enjoying a complete change of pace. It’s somewhere to unwind, recharge, and enjoy everything the Lake District has to offer — whatever the weather.

And it’s not just humans who enjoy the getaway. Their black cockapoo Wispa is a regular visitor too, and apparently takes her Keswick holidays very seriously — especially when it comes to keeping a close eye on the rabbits in the garden and greeting every dog she can find in the nearby park.

When it comes to eating out, the recommendations come well tested. The Pheasant and Casa Bella are firm favourites, while those looking for something more relaxed can take the short walk down the old railway track to The Twa Dogs — a proper local spot that’s well worth discovering.

For those who like to stay active (and balance out all that good food), the area around Farmers Retreat is perfect for cycling. The owners regularly bring their bikes along — safely stored in the garden shed — and head out on some incredible routes. A loop around Blencathra via Threlkeld, Scales and Caldbeck offers around 35 miles of classic Lakeland riding, while a ride through Newlands Valley over to Buttermere and back via Whinlatter Pass is another standout.

If that sounds a little ambitious, there’s a gentler option too — the old railway path to Threlkeld, ideal for families and topped off nicely by a stop at the café.

Practical touches haven’t been overlooked either. There’s space to store bikes securely, and guests bringing electric bikes are welcome to charge them in the shed — keeping everything safe while you enjoy your stay.

Farmers Retreat is exactly what it says on the tin: a warm, welcoming base for switching off, getting outside, and enjoying Keswick at your own pace. Whether that’s walking, cycling, eating well, or simply relaxing with a four‑legged companion at your feet, it’s the kind of place that makes it easy.
