A view worth earning 🇫🇷

The Chemin de Nietzsche winds between the medieval village of Èze and the Mediterranean below, with views stretching across the Côte d’Azur towards Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

It’s steep, rocky and particularly unforgiving on the way back up – but with the French Riviera looking like this, we’d say it’s worth it.

HOME OF THE WEEK | Maison Richelieu

Life in the Loire Valley is best enjoyed at a slower pace. Morning markets spill into elegant town squares, château visits give way to long lunches, and vineyard-lined cycle routes connect some of France's most beautiful villages.

Maison Richelieu places you right in the heart of it all. This beautifully restored townhouse sits within the historic walled town of Richelieu, just moments from bakeries, cafés and twice-weekly markets. Behind its traditional façade, you'll find generous living spaces, four ensuite bedrooms and a surprisingly spacious walled garden with a heated pool, pool house and dining terrace.

Spend your days exploring nearby Chinon, Saumur and the Loire's celebrated châteaux, or simply wander out for fresh pastries before returning home for an afternoon by the pool.

HOME OF THE WEEK | Bastide Saint-Médard

Long before it became a holiday home, Bastide Saint-Médard belonged to a master winemaker. Today, vines still frame the views, the surrounding countryside feels wonderfully untouched, and market mornings, long lunches and the changing light across the Tarn set the pace of life.

Set within 2.5 hectares of private grounds, the house is made for gathering. There are generous living spaces, two terraces for lingering over dinner, a heated pool, tennis court and even a former studio that's now perfect for yoga, Pilates or simply escaping with a book.

The location is equally compelling. You're just a short drive from Gaillac, one of France's oldest wine regions, the hilltop village of Cordes-sur-Ciel and UNESCO-listed Albi, whose striking red-brick cathedral rises above the River Tarn.

If there's one region in France that rewards arriving hungry, it's the Dordogne.

This is the home of black truffles, foie gras, walnuts, strawberries, duck confit and some of the country's finest markets. Days begin browsing village stalls, afternoons stretch into long lunches beneath the trees, and dinner is just as likely to be at a Michelin-starred restaurant as around the table of your own château.

Our latest journal rounds up the region's unmissable foodie experiences, from bustling markets and vineyard lunches to exceptional restaurants and local specialities worth travelling for.

HOME OF THE WEEK | Villa Magalyne

High above the Côte d'Azur, Provence feels altogether different. The roads become quieter, vineyards give way to olive groves, and villages such as Claviers still revolve around the bakery, the café terrace and the weekly rhythm of local life.

Villa Magalyne sits at the end of a long private drive with far-reaching views across the Var countryside. Built on a single level, it opens effortlessly onto shaded terraces, a generous pool and two acres of olive trees, making it just as appealing for slow days at home as it is for exploring the surrounding villages.

From here, Bargemon, Seillans and Fayence are all within easy reach, each with their own markets, cafés and stone squares. Or spend the morning wandering Claviers before picking up a fresh baguette, a wedge of Banon, a bottle of local rosé and heading back to the terrace.

People often say they're planning a villa holiday in the South of France, as though it's one destination.

In reality, Provence and Languedoc couldn't feel more distinct. One is all olive groves, hilltop villages and markets that spill through centuries-old squares. The other is defined by vineyard roads, medieval citadels, oyster lagoons and a Mediterranean coastline that still feels refreshingly under the radar.

The same goes for the villas. In Provence, it's honey-coloured mas, shaded terraces and pools surrounded by lavender and cypress. In Languedoc, you'll often find larger homes, bigger gardens, more space to spread out and exceptional value, all within easy reach of vineyards, beaches and historic towns.

If you're deciding where to base your next French escape, our latest journal explores the character of both regions, from food and wine to family holidays, beaches and the kinds of villa stays each does best.

HOME OF THE WEEK | Maison Mandacou

Just outside Issigeac, one of the Dordogne's most distinctive medieval villages, Maison Mandacou sits in a sleepy hamlet surrounded by vines, walnut orchards and honey-coloured stone farmhouses. Bergerac's vineyards are close by, but so are the village bakeries, family-run cafés and one of the region's best Sunday markets.

The house is exactly what you hope to find in this part of south-west France: thick stone walls that keep the heat at bay, generous rooms, a shaded terrace for lingering over dinner and a long pool looking out onto the garden.

Don't leave without spending a morning in Issigeac. Arrive early, pick up a still-warm pain de campagne, wander between stalls selling Périgord walnuts, chèvre, foie gras and seasonal truffles, then stop for an espresso on the square before the village settles back into its usual rhythm.
