We need 1.5 million new homes. So why aren’t empty ones part of the conversation? 🏚️

Hearing Angela Rayner discuss the challenges of meeting the Government’s housebuilding target on BBC Radio 4 this morning, one thing stood out to us: no mention of long-term empty homes.

Labour is expensive. Materials are expensive. Planning takes time.

Meanwhile, homes across the country have been sitting empty for 5, 10, even 20 years.

We’re not suggesting empty homes can solve the housing crisis alone. We absolutely need to build. But surely bringing the homes we already have back into use should be a much bigger part of the strategy?

Our founder Simon Taylor believes that where a property has been empty for 5+ years and every reasonable attempt to engage the owner has failed, compulsory purchase should be considered to bring it back into use for affordable or council housing.

It’s a conversation worth having.

Young adults are living at home for longer than ever… while empty homes sit unused just down the road. 👀

On one hand, people are struggling to move out, save up and find somewhere of their own.
On the other, hundreds of thousands of homes across the UK are standing empty.

It does make you wonder.

Two problems.
One obvious conversation.

Rochdale Borough Council… you can take 7 Harewood Avenue off the long-term empty homes list ✔️

This one was reported to us by a neighbour, who knew the property had been sitting empty for years.

The owners had moved all the way up to the Shetland Islands for a quieter life — fair enough too. But while they were enjoying the sea air, the house back in Rochdale was slowly falling into disrepair. Over time, there was a burglary, windows were smashed, and the property declined further.

Our research team tracked down the owners and, after a conversation, they agreed the time had finally come to let it go.

Jonathan Goldwyn then headed up to Rochdale, agreed terms, and helped get the ball rolling — including assistance with clearing the property.

Delighted to say contracts have now exchanged, and another long-term empty property will soon be getting the second chance it deserves.

And the hunter who reported it? They’re now £1,780 richer for taking a photo and sending it in. Not bad for a few seconds’ work 👀

You never forget your first.

A huge congratulations to Ethan Kessel on completing his very first property deal for Empty Property Hunters. 🏡

This wasn’t the easiest purchase, but with patience, persistence and the right approach, Ethan helped remove the barriers that had kept this property empty for years.

Now, instead of sitting forgotten, it’ll be brought back into use as a home once again.

A brilliant achievement and the first of many. Congratulations, Ethan! 👏
