So, what’s next?

Having provided face to face bystander awareness in the city centre, tested our hotel industry’s resilience against child exploitation and detailed the ‘signs of grooming’ to look out for… what now?

Operation Makesafe doesn’t stop here.

The Plymouth City Centre team will receive specialist training around child exploitation and grooming, then deliver this to hotels across Plymouth. The intention being to help steer their working practices towards a safeguarding centric approach.

Educational material has been developed and will be delivered to every secondary school within the city by neighbourhood Police Officers. This will help educate pupils on how to spot the signs of grooming in their friends, and how to report this through schools and the Police.

Strong working relationships with transport industries in Plymouth will be maintained and education will be provided to help recognise and report the signs of exploitation (County Lines).

Lastly, the materials developed and used for this Plymouth Op will be used across Devon and Cornwall, with upcoming days of action happening elsewhere in the force area.

As parents and carers, what can you do?

The key message is to understand that grooming can happen to any young person, regardless of their upbringing, their ethnic background or gender identity.

Have those open and honest conversations with your children and young people. Educate and empower them to recognise the signs to protect themselves.

Social media has allowed groomers direct access to your young people.

Ensure the relevant age restrictions for social apps are followed and make sure strangers cannot add your children with ‘quick add’ features. Turn these off!

Lastly, if you spot the signs of grooming, report it.
