If we didn't have a relationship, would you still be willing to stake your reputation for me?

A little diversion from the conversation on building relationships.

We often hear that relationships are catalysts, and that’s true.

But I believe there is another currency that is even more powerful; HONOUR.

Relationships may give you access. Honour makes people go beyond what is expected.

Think about it.

I have professional relationships with colleagues and my boss. We work together, achieve results together, and interact regularly. But there are sacrifices I may never make for them, simply because our connection is built on a common goal, not necessarily honour.

Then there are people I don’t have a personal relationship with. Some don’t even know I exist. Yet I honour them so deeply that if the opportunity ever arises, I would gladly inconvenience myself to help them.

Not because we have a relationship, but because I hold them in high esteem.

This is exactly how Fii Stephen and I became friends.

A few years ago, when he was relocating to Lagos, he reached out because he needed an apartment. I don’t do apartment rentals, but I went out of my way to help him secure one and made sure he settled in properly.

At that point, we didn’t have a relationship.

I did it purely out of honour for the kind of person I believed he was and the impact of the work he was doing. To this day, I haven’t done that for anyone else.

The currency here wasn’t a relationship. It was honour.

Relationships create proximity. Honour creates priority.

A relationship may earn you an introduction. Honour makes someone stake their reputation on you.

A relationship may get you into the room. Honour makes someone reserve a seat for you.

People rarely make extraordinary sacrifices simply because they know you. They do it because they honour you.

Because they trust your character and you have proven to be someone worth backing.

So yes, build relationships, meet people, expand your network. But don’t stop there, pursue a life that earns honour, and pray that your life consistently gives people a reason to honour you.
