Settlement day comes after you've sold when the balance of money is exchanged, the keys are exchanged, you're out, they're in.
If you can, try to avoid same-day settlement.

Moving is stressful enough without trying to empty one house, clean it and unpack into another all before 4 PM on the same day.

Two ways to approach this could be:
1. Negotiate at time of purchase for a Right to Occupy the property that you're trying to purchase in advance of settlement date.
2. Get Bridging Finance for just a few days so you can settle, take possession and move at your own pace.
