Incredible progress is happening at Port Nikau’s future town centre.

If you've been down to the marina recently, you will have noticed the large earthworks underway. We’re busy moving 3,500 tonnes of dirt every day to build a 3m-high preload mound (60,000 tonnes in total!)

This work helps ensure the land is ready for development and keeps the project on track for the first town centre buildings to begin construction from 2029.

A quick guide on what to check:
- Engines, fuel, batteries, and bilge pumps
- Hull, seacocks, steering, and anchor gear
- Trailer: WoF, reg, tyres, lights, brakes, and bearings
- Lifejackets fit
- VHF working and with operator certificate
- EPIRB/PLB registered and current
- Planning: Check forecasts, tides, bar, and trip report

Originally launched in 1967 as the largest aluminium sailing yacht of her time, Firebird has been thoughtfully transformed through an 18-month refit in Thailand.

Guided by owner Paul Andrews and recorded by SuperYacht Times, the project used timeless craftsmanship and modern functionality to preserve the yacht's heritage, preparing her for decades of adventures ahead.

Did you know many marine pests hitch a ride on boat hulls, anchors, and marine equipment?

Once established, they can outcompete native species, impact fishing and aquaculture, damage marine habitats, and increase maintenance costs for boats and marina infrastructure.

You can help stop their spread by:
• Hauling out at least annually, and anytime there is a buildup of fouling
• Checking niche areas like propellers, rudders, intakes, and other hard-to-reach spots
• Cleaning anchors, chains, and equipment before moving to a new location
• Disposing of any marine growth in a bin going to landfill, not back into the sea where it could reproduce

These simple actions help protect Northland's beautiful harbours and keep our marine environment healthy for the future.
