🌿 AI-CROPBREED Open Days | May 9, 2026 - science opened its doors
Today, as part of the Zilele Horticulturii Bucureștene / Bucharest Horticulture Days, the experimental fields and greenhouses of the Faculty of Horticulture at USAMV București hosted the first Open Days event of the AI-CROPBREED project.
Guests came face to face with one of the real questions of contemporary agriculture: can artificial intelligence anticipate premature flowering (bolting) in carrot (Daucus carota L.) - before the damage is done?
The project, funded through the European ICT-AGRI-FOOD programme and coordinated in Romania by USAMV București, brings together research teams from Turkey, Poland and Romania. The stakes are not trivial: in years marked by unpredictable springs, bolting can destroy up to 40% of the harvest, leaving behind woody, commercially worthless roots.
The answer we are building: a convolutional neural network trained on seedling imagery, genetic data and environmental parameters - a system that reads the plant from its earliest stages and estimates the risk of early flowering.
