NYC-based designer/builder Lauren Wesley Spear took this Dutch gambrel down to the bones and brought it back with a ton of personality and charm. The original roofline is still very much the star—allowing for a massive double height ceiling in the living room—but now there are also oak floors, cedar siding, a wood-burning Nova stove.

Warm terracotta tile and repurposed first-generation IKEA pine furniture from the 1950s show up in multiple rooms, making the whole place feel a little earthy, a little 70s, and very far from a basic new build.

And then there’s the lighting. Vintage pieces mix with RBW and Noguchi Akari lighting throughout, and they’re so good they almost deserve their own carousel. It’s a lot of thoughtful detail, but none of it feels precious and the layout is supremely practical for living, hosting, and (if you need to) working at home.

The primary bath may be our favorite example: a soaking tub under a skylight, heated floors, loads of tile and a big window looking straight into the trees. Outside, there’s a two-level deck overlooking a seasonal brook, plus an outdoor shower and a firepit tucked into the woods.

The home is under 5 miles to the entrance to Minnewaska State Park and under 90 miles to the George Washington Bridge.

WHAT WE LOVE THE MOST? The fact that the home has all of the new build benefits but the kind of character you usually have to wait decades for.
