Waking up to water in your basement is NEVER how you want to start your day. 😳💦

Especially when a power outage has stopped your sump pump—and there’s no battery backup.

First, stay calm and determine where the water is coming from. Depending on the situation, you may need:

🔹 A plumber — to identify the source and check your sump pump and plumbing.

🔹 A water restoration company — to dry out significant water, wet flooring, carpet, or drywall.

🔹 Your insurance agent — to discuss whether the damage may be covered.

Once the immediate problem is handled, consider why it happened and how to prevent it in the future. A sump pump battery backup may be worth considering.

📁 AND PLEASE — DOCUMENT EVERYTHING.

Save your photos, receipts, invoices, estimates, insurance paperwork, and repair records.

When you eventually sell your home, disclose the water issue—even if it was repaired, everything is dry, and you haven’t had another problem.

Being able to explain what happened, who addressed it, and how it was repaired is much better than leaving a future buyer wondering what you’re not telling them.

A repair doesn’t mean you should hide the history. Documentation helps you tell the story accurately and honestly.
