Update on ticks in Minnesota

We have had a warmer-than-average spring season, and this impacted ticks for 2026. Public health officials say the risk is higher than the baseline.

Ticks are more active in May and June. You will find them on tall grass and waiting for a pet or human leg to latch on to.

The types of ticks in Minnesota.

The American Dog Tick – called the wood tick. It is large and brown with white marking on the head. Less likely than deer ticks to transmit diseases.

The blacklegged tick – the deer tick. It is more of public health concern. Smaller than a wood tick and reddish brown in color. One in three of these ticks carry lime disease. Deer ticks are the size of a poppy seed.

Best things to do…shower within two hours of being in the woods, check your pet immediately upon returning home, Check children extra carefully…especially at hairline and around ears. Also check clothing.

Remove ticks with fine-tipped tweezers and make sure you get the head. Then clean with alcohol. If you get a bull’s-eye rash or have fever, joint pain and fatigue immediately see your doctor.

Review of Hutong in The Shard in London

Hutong is in The Shard and on the 33rd floor with views of the Thames and London skyline. The menu is inspired by Northern China and Imperial kitchens of old Peking. It has Sichuan-style dishes and amazing Peking duck. Open for lunch Monday to Friday and dinner every night. You must go through security on the main street level and then take an express elevator to the restaurant. Their website https://hutong.co.uk/

We had the Skyline Experience Dinner (comes with window table). It is 145 pounds per person but well worth the experience. Pictured below is the full meal experience as well as pictures of the food.

The service was outstanding, the décor was beautiful, the bathroom was lovely and unusual as you are standing and looking 33 floors up to the London skyline (lol), the view is unmatched and the food was amazing (Peking duck is the best I have ever had!).

I gave it five out of five stars. I have been there twice and will go again next time I am in London!

The importance of Memorial Day

Memorial Day first celebrated in...
Memorial Day was first called "Decoration Day." On May 30 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans, Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, established Decoration Day as a way for the nation to honor the graves of those who died in the Civil War with flowers.
It is believed that May 30th was chosen by Logan as the day to observe Decoration Day because flowers would be in bloom nationwide.
What state first celebrated Memorial Day?
This is up for debate which city actually celebrated Memorial Day first, although the first large observation was held at Arlington National Cemetery for a crowd of about 5,000 in 1868.
In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York the official "birthplace" of the holiday.
When was it declared a federal holiday?
In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday, placing it as the last Monday in May. The day was expanded to honor all those who have died in American wars.
Congress in December 2000 passed and the president signed into law "The National Moment of Remembrance Act," to ensure those who sacrificed their lives for the country were not forgotten.

How to observe Memorial Day

At 3 p.m. local time, Americans are asked to take part in the National Moment of Remembrance, a time to pause in a moment of silence to honor those who have died serving the U.S.
We all surround ourselves with family and friends on Memorial Day
and BBQ or enjoy the freedoms we sometimes take for granted.

But these freedoms we enjoy came with great sacrifice by our fellow Americans who fought and died for our great country. So at 3pm on Monday lets bow our heads and honor those that have given us so much with their lives!

Review of Ciao Bella at in Bloomington for lunch

Located at 3501 Minnesota Drive in Bloomington. They are just off France Ave. They are open for lunch Monday to Friday and dinner every night. You can make a reservation by calling 952-841-1000 or OpenTable.

Google has 9.5k reviews and an extremely high rating of 4.7.

Their website - https://ciaobellamn.com.

Here is what they say about themselves…At Ciao Bella, we serve simple, fresh Italian cuisine made from local ingredients. Our handcrafted meals are accompanied by a thoughtful, approachable wine selection. We believe dining is more than food: it is an experience, and ours is quality. Enjoy your handcrafted meal on our lively outdoor patio or take in the local art collection in our dining room. Our philosophy is simple: quality food and wine presented with welcoming service. Every meal. Every day.
A Minneapolis metro favorite, Ciao Bella was opened in 1997 by Minneapolis restaurateur Rick Webb, whose pursuits have set the standard in Twin Cities dining for over 40 years.

The inside is beautiful, elegant, and loud. The outside bar area has a fun feel, and the patio is lovely. Unfortunately, the patio is not dog friendly (service dogs only). The bathroom is beautiful and was exceptionally clean.

The prices are medium to medium high for Bloomington, but you are paying for a wonderful meal in a beautiful first-class environment.

Their menu… https://ciaobellamn.com/menu/.

So, what did we have?

• Calamari – generous portion and not chewy, just right. Served with lemon garlic aioli. Priced at $17.95.
• Seared Ahi Tuna – beautiful presentation, very nice flavors. Skimpy on the tuna. Priced at $20.95 for the appetizer.
• Linguini Di Mare – wonderful assortment of seafood. Somewhat of a small portion but it was excellent! Priced at $23.95.

This restaurant offers a beautiful interior and patio, excellent food and upper medium prices, a lovely patio that is not dog friendly and great service. It also gives you a very loud environment and if you had a large table there is a good chance not all of you could hear each other talk. I give it four stars **** out of five. Would have been higher but the loud environment made me reduce it one star.
