Looks like quarried slate. Weighs a fraction.

This is DaVinci composite slate on the pool house at Cleveland Forest Retreat. It reads like the real thing, matches the
main house, and takes hail and falling limbs without cracking — which matters under Greenville's oaks.

The roof curves at the eave, so it couldn't go on as panels. Every slate went on as an individual piece: two stainless steel nails in each one, a small shim between neighbors so the gaps stay uniform, layer by layer up to the peak.

Copper drip edge underneath all of it — blinding today, brown in a year, green in ten. Then the hip and ridge, the
crowning touch.

A circle made of straight lines.
11:03 in the morning this was a round hole in a block wall. By 5:25 that evening, the ring was up — the masons were back the next morning for the final touches.

The keystone goes in first — the piece at the top that everything else leans on. Then the masons work their way around the circle, one straight-edged stone at a time, each one cut so the joints point back to the center. No template, no form. Just a level, a string line, and a crew that has done this before.

The front door faces Bearwallow Mountain.

Front porch, back porch, and 20-mile views off the back. Cedar timbers and stone, covered porches
on two levels front and back, and the primary rooms turned toward the long view. A traditional mountain house — the kind that looks
like it has been standing there a while — but the plan is doing something
specific: the elevations give up the easy wall space so the view gets the room
instead.

There's a drain running around this entire pool. You can't see it in any of these shots.

At our Cleveland Forest Retreat project the Crab Orchard flagstone stops a half inch short of the coping, and that shadow line is the drain. The whole deck drains through it. On most pool decks you'd have a plastic strip grate running the full perimeter and a caulked expansion joint at the stone — we used neither.

But the reason it works is the part nobody photographs. Every stone gets templated and cut by hand to hold a half-inch mortar joint around its whole perimeter. And watch what the mason taps them down with: a four-by-four. Soft enough it won't crack the flagstone, heavy enough that the weight squeezes the mortar out the sides and beds the stone right down to height. A rubber mallet won't do that.

A half inch of shadow. Everything else is stone.

The stone you'll see on this house won't be holding it up.

Here's the trick, straight from the site: on the new master bathroom addition at our 1881 farmhouse renovation in Highlands, we set the framing proud of the block foundation — just enough that when the stonemasons lay the stone, it rises flush with the wall above and looks like it's carrying the house. It isn't. The block behind it does the heavy-duty work, exactly the way the original stone foundations on this house have carried it since 1881.

Stone where you'll see it. Structure where you won't.

This chimney was built in 1881. This week, new walls started rising around it.
We're deep into framing on this farmhouse renovation in Highlands. The low wing on the east side is the original
kitchen — still wearing the wide-plank pine sheathing it was built with — and directly above it our framers are
rebuilding the second-story walls that had reached the end of their run. New bones, carrying old ones.
The windows aren't in yet, but stand in the new dining room and you'll understand why this house has been worth
saving for 145 years.

There's copper wire buried in this pool deck. That's not a detail we chose — it's code.

Before any concrete went down at our Cleveland Forest Retreat project, three things went in: a plastic v***r barrier, wire mesh, and two copper bonding wires running the full perimeter of the pool. The copper ties the deck's steel into the pool's bonding system. Once the trucks show up, you'll never see any of it again.

Then, after the pour, the slab gets covered in plastic — same material, opposite side. Same reason both times. Concrete doesn't dry, it cures, and the longer you can keep the water in it, the stronger it ends up and the less it cracks. Rushing that is how you get a deck full of hairlines in three years.

Flagstone goes down next week.

Most people would call the bottom floor a basement. Walk out the back and you'll disagree.

It opens onto the terrace at grade, with the pool right there — three bedrooms, a lounge, a gym, a rec room. That's a second living floor, not a basement.

It happens because of a decision made before the house was ever drawn.

This lot at The Ramble falls twelve feet from the road down to the back of the house. We didn't move any of it. The main floor sits at the existing grade up by the garage. The lower floor sits at the existing grade down by the pool. The house takes up the difference.

Build it the other way and you're pushing dirt across the whole site and putting up a wall to hold it back. This way, most of the lot never gets touched — and you end up with a lower level nobody would call a basement.

The most expensive detail on this pool deck is one you'll never see.

Most pools drain through a plastic strip grate and a caulked expansion joint at the coping. At our Cleveland Forest project, we're doing neither. A stainless steel slot drain runs around the entire perimeter of the pool — when the Crab Orchard flagstone deck goes in, all that's left is a clean half-inch shadow line at the edge of the coping. No grate. No caulk joint. Just stone.
