SUMMER SOLSTICE: THE LONGEST DAY! This weekend marks the summer solstice, the point at which the earth's tilt toward the sun reaches it's maximum angle. The actual solstice occurs on Sunday, when we'll enjoy nearly 15 hours of daylight between sunrise and sunset. In Avalon, sunrise will occur at 5:33am Sunday morning, and sunset will occur at 8:28pm.

Avalon Historical Society 19th Olde House Tour Friday, June 19th

Avalon Historical Society is hosting its nineteenth annual Olde House Tour on Friday, June 19 from 1 to 4pm. This is an exceptional walking tour that shows early Avalon “treasures”. Since we are celebrating the 50th year of America we are featuring the four churches of Avalon that were built 1892 thru 1928. These four churches are still worshiping today, two year-round and two thru the summers. Also being featured are three beautiful homes built 1907 thru 1935. See how these early Avalon homes are brought into the twenty-first century, with their unique transformations. Chair Rose Marie Chew refers to these homes as the “Treasures of Avalon”, and the homeowners are happy to share them with you. Visit the History Center at 215 39th Street, Avalon (609-967-0090) for further information and tickets.

IT'S TURTLE TIME! Please keep an eye open for turtle crossings while traveling local roadways! At this time of year diamondback terrapins seek high ground on which to lay eggs and often cross roadways while doing so. Although some of our roadways have turtle fences along them, turtles can still be found crossing in many areas. Please slow down to avoid them! If you're inclined to help a turtle across the road, please take all necessary steps to ensure your own safety in traffic, and then cross the turtle in the direction it was headed.
