Nightly journal after my nightly photography walk:
I grew up in a super crappy Doublewide right here in this exact spot. This is not a pity party, it simply is reality. During the winter, I smelled like campfire because a fireplace was only thing to warm our home. In the summertime, I had to put a washcloth on my chest just to cool down enough to sleep. I remember bugs crawling across me at night. I remember snakes during the day. I remember working hard. I remember extreme loneliness. Dusty. Bleak. Hot. I grew to resent this place in a way that I didn’t realize until now. Photography has a way of changing the way I perceive reality. I don’t think that this is necessarily bad thing. It’s interesting how my love for this place grows with each photo I take. So much history. It’s funny because I constantly think about the pioneers and often wonder how they survived the heat. Sure we had a window unit cooler, but that hardly helped lol. Romanticizing your life can look like pretending we were pioneers instead of trailer trash. That’s the reality I choose to live by. We weren’t trash. Just regular hardworking people trying to get by.

This trip couldn’t have gone smoother! Finished Kristin Hannah’s The Four Winds and tbh I kinda hated it. Went from depressing to depressing. It was inherently good I just wasn’t in the mood. Definitely made me appreciate living in the San Joaquin Valley NOT during the dust bowl.

Intentionality is a beautiful thing. Restraint. Lately I’ve been on a journey to be intentional about WHEN I film content. Where I film it. How I film it. All while keeping authenticity. I’m also pushing myself to learn more about the old cameras I already own because I KNOW getting a new one won’t solve my problems haha! I’m surrounded by a sea of lavenders and golds in the evening, and I live for 8:25pm these days.
