My husband and I were on vacation recently, and we got to wondering… why are hotel lobbies SO huge when nobody ever seems to hang out in them?

Well, turns out, people used to. A LOT.

Back in the 1800s and early 1900s, grand hotels were more than just places to sleep. Their lobbies were social gathering spots where people met friends, read newspapers, conducted business, and went to see and be seen.

Think Starbucks + a social club + a coworking space… all rolled into one very fancy room.

As travel habits changed, lobbies became more of a place to check in, grab your key, and head to your room.

But here's the funny part: Hotels are now adding cafés, bars, and comfortable gathering spaces to encourage people to hang out in their lobbies again.

So we've basically come full circle. 😂

Please tell me we're not the only ones who have wondered about this! Or have you never given those ridiculously huge lobbies a second thought?

A dozen is 12.

A baker’s dozen is 13.

Am I the only one who’s ever wondered why? 🤔

Turns out, that extra loaf may have been a baker’s way of staying out of trouble.

The story goes all the way back to medieval England, when laws regulated the weight of bread. Bakers could face penalties for selling underweight loaves—and when you’re making bread by hand, getting every single loaf to weigh exactly the same isn’t exactly easy.

So bakers had a pretty good reason to err on the side of giving customers more, not less.

When selling a dozen loaves, some would add an extra loaf (or otherwise add extra bread) to make sure the customer wasn’t being shortchanged. Over time, that extra became associated with bakers—and a “baker’s dozen” came to mean 13.

And just to clear up one little myth: there wasn’t actually a medieval law that said, “Thou shalt give 13 loaves.” The laws were about the weight of the bread. The extra was basically a little insurance policy for the baker.

So there you have it. A baker’s dozen may not have started with generosity so much as a healthy fear of getting in trouble. 😂
