Over the last several years, I've shifted my focus from just organizing things to understanding their significance and value, historically and personally. This isn't how every organizer works, but I hope more people will think about this. A large portion of the US and global population have amassed a huge amount of stuff. Much of it will be shifting hands in coming years.

This has me wondering what will happen to it all.

How does using a craft lens apply? It is a framework that I have developed, based on my designing, craft making, thinking and research.

Was it the Wagons? Very interesting read.

What happens when overwhelming demand collides with an event that was not prepared to manage it?

The Replacements, Ltd. Yard Sale was scheduled to run from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. By the time we arrived before 8:30 Saturday morning, the road was blocked and the event had already reached capacity. By approximately 10:00, Replacements announced that it had sold through all of the available inventory.

Selling everything may sound like a tremendous business success, but many customers who drove for hours were left sitting in traffic or turned away with very little information.

In my latest substack, I take a closer look at what may have caused the event to unravel, including the unusually generous wagon promotion, and the larger business lesson behind it: demand has to be supported by thoughtful operations, communication, staffing and contingency planning.

I also explore what that incredible turnout tells us about the growing secondhand economy. Thousands of people were willing to wake up before sunrise and travel across cities and states for the opportunity to shop previously owned merchandise. That is a story worth paying attention to.

Photo dump August-Sept! WNC-MSP

I've been a woman on a mission this past month!

At the end of August, I attended the Penland School of Craft annual fundraising auction where I once again witnessed incredible talent & generosity in the artists & community that came out to support the future of Craft education.

Back scstatemuseum, I saw the Guiness world record breaking sweetgrass basket 'Big Percy'.

Over labor day weekend I traveled to Minneapolis & attended the state fair, which was a revelation in craft (& fried foods; ). The was truly the shining star of the show!

For the next several days, I was reunited with old friends & met new ones as we convened & celebrated craft across the region during the conference & awards ceremony.

My mission...to support & advocate for craft histories, thinking & education continues with a sustained & fortified resolve after being in craft community!

More to come, as I really feel I'm just getting started!

Many objects carry memories, but not every meaningful item has high financial value (i.e., liquidity).

There are many reasons people struggle to make objective decisions, including physical challenges such as chronic pain, emotional and physical disorders, stress, lack of time, and executive function differences.

My role is to support clearer decisions through two forms of professional insight that technology cannot fully replace: context and judgment.

Join Heather powers, president of the International Center for Indigo Culture and SCAD alumna (Fibers BFA, 1998), and Professor Jessica Smith as they guide Fibers students through cultivating and processing Indigofera suffriticosa at the BACK40, SCAD's sustainable urban farm

This virtual program is designed to educate consumers, artists, and farmers about the importance of this irreplaceable regional agricultural and cultural resource. It explores indigo's history in the Lowcountry, the coastal region from north of Charleston, South Carolina through Savannah, Georgia to Jacksonville, Florida. Once a major colonial cash crop and source of the regions iconic deep blue dye, indigo is now being revived by Gullah Geechee farmers and artisans to preserve cultural heritage, sustain family lands, and produce natural, non-toxic dyes.

Over two days, the SCAD Fibers department and Heather Powers demonstrate cultivating and processing Indigo leaves into dye stuff, covering harvest, fermentation, filtration, drying and storage.

Day 1 - Thursday, September 24, 12-1:30 PM (est)

Examines indigo's significance as both cash crop and art form, including tools and methods used by enslaved people, many from West African Indigo-dying traditions, and how contemporary artisan and farmers carry the practice forward today. As students harvest plants, Heather will demonstrate a fresh leaf using freshly picked leaves.

Day 2- Friday, September 25, 10-2 PM (est)

Covers pigment extraction, an half-day process, open to time in and out, culminating in filtration of the extracted Indigo for drying and storage.

All stages will be recorded and shared with registered participants afterwards.
