New York and Los Angeles are silently jealous. 🤫 While everyone is discussing the basic pros, here are the real Chicago Green Flags that only locals know about:
- Pedway an underground city for cold weather. Downtown features over 5 miles of heated underground walkways connecting more than 50 buildings (including residential complexes, subway stations, shops, and offices). In winter, you can walk to work or get coffee without wearing a coat.
- A river that flows backward. In 1900, Chicago engineers reversed the flow of the Chicago River to protect Lake Michigan from pollution. It is the only river in the world with a completely reversed flow an engineering marvel we use every single day.
- No trash on the sidewalks thanks to the Alley System. Unlike New York, where piles of bags sit right on the pedestrian walkways, 90% of Chicago buildings have rear alley access. All service functions happen back there, keeping the streets clean and aesthetically pleasing.
- A completely free zoo and botanical garden downtown. Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the last fully free zoos in the US, open 365 days a year right amid the greenery and skyline views.
- The Lakefront Ordinance. Since 1973, a strict municipal law has been in place: no private individual or developer has the right to block access to the lake. All 26 miles of the shoreline belong 100% to the residents.
