Earlier this week at HOW’s South Office, clients in the HOW Employment Program (HEP) connected with employers, explored open positions, and took the next step toward long-term stability.

Through HEP, clients have access to career education and workforce support all year long, including mock interviews, paid employee training, digital literacy workshops, and one-on-one employment guidance.

Every interview, application, and conversation is part of something bigger: creating opportunities and rebuilding lives.

It's that time of year again! Join Housing Opportunities for Women’s Associate Board on June 18 for a night of networking, drinks, and community in support of a mission that has never been more important.

For more than 40 years, HOW has helped individuals and families across Chicagoland move from housing instability to long-term stability through housing, healthcare support, employment services, and wraparound care.

Right now, critical federal funding cuts are putting many nonprofit services at risk, including programs that thousands of Chicagoans rely on every year. Because of this new reality, community support is more important than ever.

At this event, HOW staff and Associate Board members will share more about the organization’s work, the challenges ahead, and how monthly donors can help sustain these life-changing services.

This past weekend, our Associate Board pitched HOW's mission to prospective volunteers at Palmhouse in Evanston. They had the chance to connect with the community and raise awareness around the importance of our fight against homelessness.

HOUSING 👏 IS 👏 HEALTHCARE 👏

As we covered in our last newsletter, NPR’s 1A recently released an episode exploring how Medicaid cuts by the Trump administration could leave American hospitals vulnerable in the years ahead.

More than 80 million people, including 74% of HOW clients, rely on Medicaid. Access to consistent healthcare is a critical part of stability for low-income Americans and losing that access would be catastrophic for many communities.

HOW's Employment Program (HEP) is hosting another job fair for our clients on May 27!

While an event like this only lasts a day, what happens before and after it is what makes the difference.

Our clients will have a chance to network with prospective employers, build their resumes, and receive industry insight to help them land their next job. HEP has offered trainings focused on digital literacy, college admissions, and job readiness to prepare for moments like this.

She stayed committed to the process and found *exactly* what she had been working toward.

Navigating the ups and downs of her job search, one of our clients was recently hired after building her career skills with the help of HOW.

She leaned into the support around her, working closely with a case manager and continuing to push forward. That effort led to a new position in a warehouse, marking an important step forward in her career.

“We are so proud of the client’s recent success in obtaining employment,” her case manager said. “We look forward to their continued success and growth!”

Moments like this are a reminder of what is possible with the right support.

HOW made several updates to our housing programs in 2025, the first being starting construction on our complete rehabilitation project for our 1614 Jonquil property. By the end of the project, all 25 units of much-needed affordable housing will be restored at the location.

Last week, our team took a hard hat tour of the property. More updates to come later this summer 👀

As it starts to get cold...we've been collecting winter coats to keep our clients safe & warm as they travel to medical appointments, job interviews, school, etc - many of our clients arrive to our program with little more than the clothes they are wearing, so providing them with a winter coat is vital.

𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐭𝐬! You can pick up a collection bin to place in a coffee shop, building lobby, corporate office, wherever makes sense to you! Please DM us to coordinate picking up a box, and/or dropping off coats.
