Independence Day 2026 hit a little differently this year. While it was a milestone year and marked 250 years of independence with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 - July 4th is also special for my family for personal reasons.
70 years ago, my grandmother and great grandmother came to this country from Italy seeking a better life. They left their small town of Pofi, in the province of Frosinone and arrived via the SS Andrea Doria. If they didn't take that huge leap (especially as a young woman and teen), the rest of our family would not be where we are today.
Interestingly, our family has been planning a family trip to Italy for quite some time, and we were finally able to take that trip this year. There were 12 of us total who were able to make the trip and it was a whirlwind. While the "vacation" was a great time and many memories were made, I don't think it was a mere coincidence that we flew back yesterday, on July 4, 2026 (exactly 70 years since my grandmother and great grandmother made their journey). I think fate had something to do with it. I get chills now just thinking about how we were able to make the trip and travel on that same fateful day.
I thank you Nonny and Grandma for your fortitude and faith which have allowed us to create amazing lives - your strength has been passed down and your legacy will live on forever!

Hope everyone had a very Happy Independence Day! But we need to take a page out of the Italians' play book - La Dolce Vita!
