Sometimes, you just need to get started, even if it is not in the most ideal place.

This flower barrel has been sitting empty by my gate, waiting for me to give it to my daughter. Somehow, this sunflower planted itself there. There was nothing else growing around it, but maybe it was brave enough to take root anyway. Now it has grown tall and has three blooms.

Starting a business can feel much the same. You may have an idea without the perfect plan, perfect timing, or forever space. Sometimes, you just have to be brave enough to begin, put down roots, and give yourself the opportunity to grow.

On September 10, Kim Rocker, Stephanie Burton, and I enjoyed attending the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce’s M2M workshop, “Want to Be the Most Interesting Person in the Room?”

One of the best takeaways was simple but powerful: The secret to being interesting is to be interested. Genuine curiosity helps us create more meaningful conversations, build stronger relationships, and become better listeners—skills that are valuable in business and in life.

Labor Day is more than the unofficial end of summer.

Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day recognizes the American workers whose skill, dedication, and perseverance have helped build our communities and strengthen our economy. The holiday grew out of the labor movement of the late 1800s, when workers advocated for fair wages, reasonable working hours, and safer working conditions.
