My first experience at the Ohio Renaissance Festival was fun and pretty muddy. The gates open at 10:30, and we arrived at 10. The big grass lot was a little treacherous to drive through after a night of rain, but we made it OK. The peoplewatching while everyone dress into their costumes was unmatched.

I would estimate 75%+ of people have some sort of costume on. Every weekend has a different theme. We went during pirate weekend, but you can wear whatever costume you're into from what I saw.

The food my husband always raved about was the scotch egg (hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage) and the bread bowl. Both were pretty good!

Right when we walked in we went to the Mud Show and then Kamikaze Fireflies. If there are shows you really want to see, I would suggest going to them early in the day, as many of them didn't have any seating by the afternoon.  My husband said the app has the schedule and a map and is great to plan your day. 

Speaking of the map, this place is gigantic! I was there with people who know the layout so I just followed them around, but I never really got my bearings.

The new area they opened is called Whimsy Woods, and it was my favorite. Lovely trees. Very shady. A new brewery where Celtic Mayhem was playing. A bubbling brook with beautiful flowers around it. People doing a maypole. My kids even got to meet the queen!

I'm not a big spender, so I tried not to think about how much everything costs on top of tickets. Every show is free but they ask for tips and donations, which we gladly gave. It was very entertaining.

All in all, a great day with family we love!
