🌳 BIG TREE #3: EASTERN COTTONWOOD 🌳

Tree #3 from our day with the Texas A&M Forest Service measuring some of East Texas’ giants for the Texas Big Tree Registry was a tall Eastern Cottonwood in Red River County!

Eastern cottonwoods are known for their incredibly fast growth. Look how much taller it is in the drone photo than the other trees surrounding it. The timber surrounding it are all mature uncut hardwood species as well. Also even notice how massive the vine is growing up this tree!

📏 Circumference: 255 inches
📐 Height: 123 feet!
🌳 Crown Spread: 114 feet

At this size, you can't help but wonder how many floods, storms, droughts, and generations this tree has seen.

🌳 BIG TREE #2: CHERRYBARK OAK 🌳

Here’s Tree #2 from our recent day measuring some of East Texas’ giants for the Texas Big Tree Registry with the Texas A&M Forest Service!

This time, it’s an impressive Cherrybark Oak.

📏 Circumference: 247"
📐 Height: 103'
🌳 Crown Spread: 147'

Cherrybark oaks are one of the impressive native hardwoods found in East Texas, and this one definitely earned its spot on our list to measure.

We’ve still got more big trees coming, so stay tuned for Tree #3!

🌳 Measuring Three East Texas Giants! 🌳

The Big Tree Registry recognizes the largest known trees of each species found across the state and the country. It’s a great program that helps document and recognize these old giants, and we were blessed to be able to stretch a tape around three new contenders!

This specimen is a Water Oak, located in Red River County. It has an impressive 255" in circumference, 112' Crown spread and 94' height. This should easily put this as the largest Water oak in TX and likely the biggest in the US! The other two we will post in a later post, are equally as impressive.

A big thanks to the Texas A&M Forest Service (Retiree) for coming out, taking the official measurements, and sharing some knowledge with us.
