Was the previous generation more disciplined, or was the path to homeownership simply different?
We often hear, “People today just spend too much.”
And sure, lifestyle inflation is real. But that’s not the whole story.
Home prices have climbed. Rent is higher. Construction costs, cars, travel, groceries, and everyday expenses have changed. Add interest rates and stagnant income growth in many industries, and the math looks very different.
Maybe our generation needs to be more disciplined.
But maybe we also need to acknowledge that the goalposts have moved.
Owning a home was never easy. But for many people today, it takes significantly more income, more savings, and more time to reach the same milestone.
So the question isn't just:
“Why aren't people buying homes?”
Maybe the better question is:
“Why has homeownership become harder to achieve?”
