The Emancipation Proclamation was delivered by President Lincoln on the first day of 1863. It then proceeded for over two years before the slaves in Galveston, TX were able to learn of their freedom on this day in 1865.

Especially thankful for 1865 studios who really took the time to explain the importance and impact of this date, especially since the official Juneteenth holiday has less than a decade in existence.
