Whole Foods coming to town!

Since January 2025, we first let you know that Whole Foods was likely planned to anchor the new Brickworks development in Frederick.

Now, it has been officially confirmed.

The $450 million, 65-acre mixed-use development at the former Frederick Brickworks manufacturing facility, located along South and East streets, officially broke ground on Wednesday.

The project is set to include a Whole Foods Market as part of its retail lineup, along with Honeygrow, First Watch, Shake Shack, Dave’s Hot Chicken, a fitness studio, and a nail salon.

We first reported last year that a lease had been signed by the supermarket chain for the upcoming development, though the project was still pending final site plan approvals at the time.

The Brickworks master plan was previously approved by Frederick’s Planning Commission in November 2023 and includes up to 1,260 homes and 130,000 square feet of retail space.

The project’s first phase is expected to be completed in 2028 and will include 332 apartments and 320 for-sale townhomes.

In a statement following the groundbreaking, Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater called the project “an exciting new chapter for Downtown Frederick and a major investment in our community,” adding that it will expand housing options while creating new opportunities, services and jobs for residents, businesses and visitors.

Additional details, including projected opening timelines for Whole Foods and the other announced businesses, will be provided as they become available.

Exciting news!

Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Jake Day announced the establishment of the Small Business Lending Program – offering four loan products to provide small business and community real estate development projects with the financial tools needed to succeed. Additionally, the Secretary announced that the first competitive application round for $14 million in Small Business Direct Loans will open on August 17, 2026.
