Today, on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we remember.

The day began like any other. At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. At 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower. Then came the attack on the Pentagon, and the extraordinary courage of the passengers and crew aboard United Airlines Flight 93, who fought back before the plane crashed in Pennsylvania.

Within minutes, our nation lost thousands of innocent lives, and a sense of innocence we could never recover.

We remember the bravery of the firefighters, police officers, paramedics and other first responders who ran toward danger while others were running away. We remember the ordinary people who simply showed up to help, carrying strangers, comforting the injured and doing whatever they could amid unimaginable devastation.

We remember those who went to work that morning and never returned home. We remember the families whose lives changed forever. And we remember the passengers of Flight 93, whose courage prevented an even greater tragedy.

Twenty-five years later, may we honor not only those we lost, but also the courage, compassion, unity and patriotism that carried our country through its darkest hours.

We must never forget.🇺🇸

It is hard to believe that tomorrow marks 25 years since September 11, 2001, a day that forever changed our nation.

I remember exactly where I was. I remember how I spent that day, the shock, fear, and the profound national grief as we struggled to comprehend the loss of nearly 3,000 innocent lives.

I remember what followed. Flags flew from homes and businesses. People gathered to pray. Strangers comforted one another. In the face of unimaginable evil, we came together as Americans with a shared sense of unity, patriotism and purpose. We understood, perhaps more clearly than at any time in many of our lifetimes, that freedom is not free.

Tomorrow, may each of us pause to remember the innocent lives taken, the families forever changed, and the first responders and ordinary citizens who demonstrated extraordinary courage. May we also reflect on the unity we found in those painful days, and ask ourselves how we might find our way back to it.

A quarter of a century has passed, but our responsibility remains:

Remember the lives.
Remember the courage.
Remember our unity.

We must never forget. 🇺🇸
