🚨 Found another S-trap today.
If your home was built before the '70s — or had any DIY plumbing done — there's a good chance one of these is hiding under a sink right now.
Here's why it matters 👇
🅿️ A P-TRAP holds a small amount of water that blocks sewer gas from rising into your home. It's been code for decades.
🆂 An S-TRAP looks similar — but its shape siphons that water out every time the sink drains.
💨 No water = no seal = sewer gas in your kitchen or bathroom.
⚠️ S-traps have been banned by plumbing code for years, but they still show up in homes across South Jersey — usually leftover from old DIY work or pre-1970s plumbing.
👃 Smell something funky near a drain? Check the trap.
🏠 Buying a home? This is one of the things I check on every single Raven inspection.

🚨 Found another S-trap today.
If you live in an older South Jersey home, there's a good chance one of these is hiding under your sink — and most homeowners have no idea what it does (or doesn't do).
Here's the deal:
A P-trap is the curved pipe under your sink that holds a small amount of water. That water blocks sewer gases from coming up into your home. Modern code requires P-traps for a reason.
An S-trap looks similar, but the shape lets the water get siphoned out every time the sink drains. No water = no seal = sewer gas in your kitchen or bathroom.
S-traps have been banned by plumbing code for decades, but they still show up in homes across Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Atlantic, Cape May, and Gloucester counties — usually from old DIY work or pre-1970s plumbing.
If you smell something funky near a drain, check the trap. And if you're buying a home, this is one of the things I check on every single Raven inspection.

This is knob‑and‑tube wiring, commonly found in homes built before the 1950s.
It wasn’t designed for today’s electrical loads, and the old insulation can crack and break down over time, increasing fire and shock risk.
Many insurance companies see active knob‑and‑tube as a higher hazard, which can mean higher premiums or limited coverage.
