Farm & Ranch Update: What to Know About the Upcoming Waterfowl Season

As the 2026–27 waterfowl hunting season approaches, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists are encouraging hunters to stay flexible as migration patterns and habitat conditions continue to change.

While overall duck populations remain a concern, recent rainfall has improved wetland conditions in parts of Texas, creating more feeding opportunities for migrating waterfowl. Habitat management and changing weather conditions will play an important role in the season ahead.

For landowners who manage property for wildlife, this is a reminder of how rainfall, wetland conditions and habitat quality can influence hunting opportunities.

FARM & RANCH REGULATORY UPDATE

A temporary change to dyed diesel rules could impact Texas farmers and ranchers.

Under a statewide disaster proclamation issued September 28, Texas farmers and ranchers can temporarily use dyed diesel on public roads, suspending the state restrictions and penalties that normally prohibit it.

Dyed diesel is traditionally intended for qualifying off-road uses, such as agricultural equipment, and is sold without the state and federal highway fuel tax. The current proclamation suspends the restrictions and penalties, but does not waive the underlying fuel tax.

The proclamation also temporarily suspends certain oversize and overweight permitting requirements for vehicles carrying fuel, agricultural or timber products, allowing those loads to operate at a gross weight of up to 95,000 pounds.

These regulatory changes are important for anyone working in Texas agriculture, transportation and land-based industries.
