We and our guests frequently enjoy seeing sturgeon frolicking in the Kennebec River while closing on their homes. It really is spectacular to witness!
This amazing fish called Sturgeon is now abundant in the Kennebec River and especially Augusta. Cleaning up of the river and removal of the dam they have more than tripled in numbers. Sturgeon were America's vanishing dinosaurs, armor-plated beasts that crowded the nation's rivers until mankind's craving for caviar in the 1800's pushed them to the edge of extinction.
More than a century later, some populations of the massive bottom feeding fish are showing signs of recovery, thankfully here in Augusta. See the great photo catching a great midair jump!
Sturgeon sometimes live longer than humans. And they spawn infrequently, often requiring half a century to bounce back from overfishing.
