At the beginning of Greystone’s story are Dr. Frank Fursey and his wife, Isabelle, early residents of Spokane’s South Hill at a time when the city was coming into its own.

Dr. Fursey, a physician whose work placed him within the fabric of Spokane’s growing community beginning in 1903, was a graduate of the University of Toronto, where he and Isabelle were originally from. He continued his studies in Edinburgh, Scotland, and later pursued specialized graduate work at the Chelsea Women’s Hospital in London, leading Dr. Fursey to become one of the first obstetricians in Spokane. He also maintained ties to the region’s broader economic landscape through involvement in the mining industry as president of a Butte, Montana-based ore mining company. It was a period defined by momentum and optimism, when the prosperity of the Inland Northwest began to shape not only commerce, but the way people chose to live. It is believed that Dr. Fursey’s wife, Isabelle, was of Scottish descent, a fact reflected in some of the nuances of Greystone's style.

In commissioning Greystone, the Furseys created more than a residence. They established a home grounded in permanence. Constructed of substantial granite from local quarries and positioned within a carefully considered landscape, the home maintains an inviting elegance of the time.
