The story of bougainvillea / Dagny state park. I remember as a kid going through the buildings. Then some other kids came in with paintball guns and homeless people started setting up camp so they tore the buildings down and reopened bougainvillea as dagny state park.

Dagny Johnson State Park in Key Largo is named after Dagny Johnson, a local environmental activist.

She was a key figure in the Florida Keys who fought to stop large-scale development in North Key Largo during the 1970s through the 1990s. Her efforts helped preserve the land that eventually became the park instead of turning into a massive resort and condo project.

Because of her impact, the state honored her by naming the park after her around 2001, shortly before she passed away in 2003. 

So, the park’s name is a tribute to someone who helped protect that exact piece of Key Largo from being developed and preserved it as the natural habitat you see today. 🌿

The Man Who Helped Build Key Largo

Known to many as “Powder Man,” Enoch “Enos” Mitchell quite literally helped build Key Largo from the ground up. Using dynamite, he helped carve out Adams Cut, along with numerous canals and boat basins that shaped the island’s landscape.

He later founded Enos Mitchell Septic Tank Corp., a business that served the community for decades and remains in operation today. In total, he spent 57 years in business—earning a reputation for hard work, fairness, and reliability.

But Mitchell’s legacy extends far beyond construction. A devoted husband to Ora Lee for 67 years, father of five, deacon, Rotarian, and community leader, he invested his time and energy into helping others. From frying conch fritters at community events to donating land for Friendship Park, he believed in giving back.

As his pastor reflected, “Mr. Mitchell understood his reason to be here on Earth"

Mitchell died in October 2023 at the age of 93 and his contributions are recognized with a plaque in his honor at Friendship Park. Key Largo still stands on the foundations he helped build—both in concrete and in community.
